Ballast water toxicity experiments

Determine the residual toxicity of ballast water treated with biocides to different marine species in single species tests.

Objective of the project: Determine the residual toxicity of ballast water treated with biocides to different marine species in single species tests

The residual toxicity of treated ballast water was tested using bacteria, algae, molluscs, rotifers, crustacean and a fish in singe species tests. The ecotoxicological endpoint values (NOEC, LOEC, EC50, EC100) were determined. Results Ballast water is used by ships to control the balance at different cargo.

Together with the ballast water non-indigenous species are transported over the world. Discharge of ballast water may result in local disturbances of coastal ecosystems. IMO has set a mandatory framework for ballast water management on board ships.
